New Roads and Street Works Act

Operatives and Supervisors working in the highway are required to hold one or more street works qualifications, in relation to the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA), depending on their job role. There are 9 operative units and 8 supervisory units that cover a range of different street works tasks.

We offer certification on Street Works from the following awarding bodies: SQA, SWQR, NPORS.

We accept SDS Individual Training Account (ITA) funding for this course.

New Roads and Streetworks Act 1991 (NRSWA) – Operatives

The aim of this course is to provide delegates with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely fulfil the duties required by the NRSWA 1991.  This course includes theory and practical elements, with tests being conducted on each.

 This course covers the following certificates:

  • LA – Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus (Key Certificate)
  • O1 – Signing Lighting and Guarding (Key Certificate)
  • O2 – Excavation in the Highway/Road
  • O3 – Reinstatement and Compaction of Backfill Materials
  • O4 – Reinstatement of Sub-base and Base in Non Bituminous Materials
  • O5 – Reinstatement of Cold Lay Bituminous Materials
  • O6 – Reinstatement of Hot Lay Bituminous Materials (not automatically included but can be arranged separately)
  • O7 – Reinstatement of Concrete Slabs (not automatically included but can be arranged separately)
  • O8 – Reinstatement of Modular Surfaces and Concrete Footways

Duration

  • 5 Day – Novice Course.

 Attendee Numbers

A maximum of 8 delegates can attend this course.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the tests, delegates will be issued with Scottish Qualifications Certificates (SQC).  Delegates will be registered with the Street Works Qualifications Register (SWQR) and issued with an Operative Card.  Each certificate shown on the card is valid for 5 years.  To maintain their card and registration with SWQR, delegates are required to complete Re-Assessment Tests for the certificates they hold, every 5 years.

This course takes place at our training centre in Bo’ness, West Lothian.

  • S2 – Monitoring Excavation in the Highway/Road
  • S3 – Monitoring Reinstatement and Compaction of Backfill Materials
  • S4 – Monitoring Reinstatement of Sub-base and Base in Non Bituminous Materials
  • S5 – Monitoring Reinstatement of Bituminous Materials
  • S6 – Monitoring Reinstatement of Concrete Slabs (not automatically included but can be arranged separately
  • S7 – Monitoring Reinstatement of Modular Surfaces and Concrete Footways

Attendee Numbers

A maximum of 8 delegates can attend this course.  Operatives must also attend to allow the Supervisor delegates to monitor the work being carried out for each certificate.

Certification

The aim of this course is to refresh the knowledge of delegates, in preparation of the re-assessment tests, for the renewal of their NRSWA / SWQR units.  Delegates are required to sit a re-assessment test for each certificate that they hold on their current SWQR Card.

 Duration

  • 2 Day – Refresher Course and Re-Assessment Tests – Maximum of 8 tests per delegate
  • 1 Day – Re-Assessment Tests Only (no refresher training included) – Maximum of 8 tests per delegate.

A maximum of 12 delegates can attend this course.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the relevant re-assessment tests, delegates will be re-issued with an SWQR Card (Operative and/or Supervisor).  Each certificate shown on the card is valid for 5 years.

This course can take place at our training centre in Bo’ness, West Lothian or at a location of your choice, subject to onsite requirements.
