Signing, Lighting and Guarding

To maintain a safe environment for pedestrians, vehicles and streetworks operatives during any street work operations, it is essential that the correct signing, lighting and guarding equipment is set up. This may include temporary traffic lights or a stop/go system, suitable signs and barriers to create temporary walkways.

We offer certification on Signing, Lighting and Guarding from the following awarding bodies: SQA, SWQR.

SQA Unit O1 – Signing, Lighting and Guarding (Operatives)

The aim of this course is to provide delegates with the knowledge and practical skills needed to carry out Signing, Lighting and Guarding duties, safely and effectively.  This course includes theory and practical elements, with tests conducted on each.

Duration

The duration of the course depends on the experience level of the delegates attending.  Typically, these are:

  • 1 Day – Novice Course
  • 1 Day – Experienced Worker Course (experienced but no previous certification)
  • 1 Day – Refresher Course (proof of previous certification is required).

Attendee Numbers

A maximum of 6 delegates can attend this course.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the tests, delegates will be issued with a Scottish Qualifications Certificate (SQC).  Delegates can also be registered with the Street Works Qualifications Register (SWQR) and issued with an Operative Card for Certificate O1 – Signing, Lighting and Guarding.  Each certificate shown on the card is valid for 5 years. 

To maintain their card and registration with SWQR, delegates are required to complete Re-Assessment Tests for the certificates they hold every 5 years. 

Location

This course can take place at our training centre in Bo’ness, West Lothian or at a location of your choice, subject to onsite requirements.

SQA Unit S1 – Monitoring Signing, Lighting and Guarding (Supervisors)

The aim of this course is to provide delegates with the knowledge and practical skills needed to supervise operatives carrying out their Signing, Lighting and Guarding duties.  This course includes theory and practical elements, with tests being conducted on each.

Duration

The duration of the course depends on the experience level of the delegates attending.  Typically, these are:

  • 1 Day – Novice Course
  • 1 Day – Experienced Worker Course (experienced but no previous certification)
  • 1 Day – Refresher Course (proof of previous certification is required).

Attendee Numbers

A maximum of 6 delegates can attend this course.  Operatives must also attend to allow the Supervisor delegates to monitor them.

Certification
